HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes - 1989.152 - Prohibiting Desecration of the Flag RESOLUTION 1989. 152 A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF EAST VALLEY WATER DISTRICT SUPPORTING A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT PROHIBITING DESECRATION OF THE FLAG The BOARD OF DIRECTORS of the East Valley Water District finds as follows: WHEREAS, the United States Supreme Court has ruled in the case of Texas v. Johnson that the burning of the Flag is protected by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, and WHEREAS, it is well recognized that such activity is repre- hensible and an affront to patriotic Americans and a denigration of those who have sacrificed their lives, fortune and sacred honor in response to what the Flag of this Country represents, and WHEREAS, it is important to protect the institutions and symbols which are well recognized to represent the liberty and freedom available in the United States of America. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Directors of the East Valley Water District, hereby requests that the elected representatives of the Congress of the United States adopt legislation or a Constitutional Amendment which will prevent the desecration of the Flag or other such symbols of the United States of America; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be communicated to the members of the California Congressional Delegation.
